It’s that time of year again. With the cold weather coming, it’s important that you protect your adhesive from getting chilled! There are many simple things we can do to avoid failure or poorly bonded applications.
Low temperatures can have adverse effects, such as thickening or changes in appearance and ultimately it can affect the bond strength.
Did you know that for every 5°C below 20°C the longer the cure time will be? Once you are below 5 °C your curing time is virtually at a standstill.
If you notice any of the signs below, your adhesive might be underperforming due to the cold weather…
- Inconsistent spray pattern
- Adhesive is spitting
- Flash off times increase
- Materials coming out of solution
- Foaming in the adhesive
We strongly recommend taking the time and precautions to properly store your product when it is not in use, especially overnight or at weekends when temperatures can drop.
7 Top Tips to make sure your adhesives don’t go to waste…
- Adhesives should be stored in a warm environment. Ideally, adhesives should be stored between 15°C and 20°C but not below 10°C.
- Keep adhesive off concrete floors and away from external walls. The floor temperature can be close to freezing. Try not to leave outdoors overnight, move canisters indoors so they are ready to use first thing in the morning.
- Use a drum heater or a heated cabinet to store your adhesive in.
- Make sure that timber or board is conditioned for a minimum of 12 hours before bonding.
- Aim to do most of your bonding late morning or middle day. Don’t bond timber on a Friday afternoon when the workshop heating is being turned off for the weekend.
- Use a fast hardener when using UF Resin
- Order your PVA on Monday-Thursdays to avoid it being in shipment over the weekend.
