Sitting at the heart of any multi-level building, few parts of a structure are in such constant use and need to withstand as much wear and tear as a building’s stairs. So, it’s essential they are built to last.
Ensuring stairs are fixed in place securely is absolutely crucial to making sure they remain safe and avoid developing any squeaks and creaks as they age. And choosing the right glue for the job can make the difference between a set of stairs that silently stand the test of time and get on with the job… or a squeaky irritation.
So, with that in mind, here are 5 key areas to focus on – with the right adhesives to choose in order to help keep your stairs safer, quieter and stronger for longer.
Stair strings
These long pieces of timber run either side of the stair and hold the treads and risers in place. They are often glued to make a usable width. The timber is normally square edged, and glue is applied to the timber and cramped. Timbond PVA or Tytex Premium Grade PVA or Timbond PU adhesive are 3 excellent products used for this application which give exceptionally strong bonds to hold the stair strings in place.
Curved stair strings
These are normally constructed around a former, by bonding layers of timber or ply together to form the shape you need for the stairs. This can be difficult and time consuming as it involves laying up the veneers or pieces of timber. Using a fast setting UF resin such as  with powder hardeners helps you get the results you want quicker and with the durability you need.
Treads and risers
As the main component of a stair these are traditionally held in place using wedges glued in place. Timbond PVA is perfect for this. The tread is grooved and the riser (the vertical piece of timber) is glued into the groove on the underside of the tread, holding everything in place and helping avoid squeaks and creaks developing over time.
Glue blocks
These triangular blocks are glued behind the tread and riser. Using a superior quality, fast setting wood adhesive like Timbond PVA or Tytex Premium Grade PVA gives added support to the joint and helps eliminate squeaky treads.
Newel posts
These support the handrail of the stair and can be a challenge to fix into place! Due to their dimensions they are often constructed by bonding two pieces of timber together and, because of their size, shrinkage and movement can be a problem. Extremely durable and easy to apply adhesives such as Titebond III, Timbond PU or resin-based products are good options to keep these strong and stable.
