How to apply edgebanding adhesive and avoid dark glue lines is a common question we get asked. These unsightly lines often appear after bonding edgebanding and detract from the overall finish. So, how can you avoid this when applying edgebanding adhesive?
The issue typically arises when you’re running a machine using a filled edgebanding adhesive – typically an EVA adhesive – as this can leave a distinct glue line between the edging and the board. The scarf or dust acting as the filler in the adhesive gets released during application and coats the rollers of the edgebanding machine. Over time this builds up and contributes to an obvious glue line developing.
Cheap edgebanding adhesives are popular but compound the issue. These products are generally ‘filled’ adhesives and while that makes them cheaper, there is less genuine raw resin in the product resulting in a poorer quality finish.
How to reduce visible glue lines with edgebanding adhesive
1. Use the correct adhesive. Use an ‘unfilled’ edgebanding adhesive. This is the best way to prevent a visible glue line. Unfilled edgebanding is usually clear and practically invisible to the eye. Examples of this include the Kleiberit 773.3 and BAM Futura 308. Although unfilled adhesives are more expensive, the end result with the glue line is far superior and the adhesive lasts much longer than a filled alternative. Unfilled products are very universal, bond many substrates and edging materials plus have excellent initial tack.
2. Colour match the edgebanding adhesive to the panel and edging to create a less obvious glue line.
3.Ensure the machine is set up correctly and not applying too much adhesive.
4. You can reduce some of the glue line visibility by removing leftover swarf or dust build up using a cleaner. A great couple of options for removing over application of edgebanding EVA adhesives are Timbond C101 or C105.
