MDF or medium density fibreboard is now one of the most popular and versatile materials for carcass and panel production, however it is one of those materials that raise questions relating to how it can be bonded to itself or indeed other materials and the best adhesives for this.
MDF Comes in many forms…
Coming in many forms from lightweight MDF, fire retardant, moisture resistant to modified MDF, such as Tricoya which reinforces how adaptable and functional MDF is, but each variation brings its own challenges when being used. Some are more absorbent than others and modified or moisture resistant MDF’s will require a different approach to the process to bond these materials.
What adhesives should you use to bond MDF?Â
Let’s take a look at 6 common applications or frequently asked questions with MDF.
1. Flat bonding of standard MDF to high pressure decorative laminates.
This is one of the most straightforward of bonding applications and a wide range of adhesives can be used however consideration should be taken as to what equipment is available and what the final product is. A good quality D3 or D4 PVA can be used or a 2 part UF resin system and can be used in hot or cold press applications. Sprayable or hand- applied contact adhesives allow for fast bonding and have the ability to give a permanent bond.

2. Bonding of paper backed veneer to curved and shaped MDF panels.Â
Paper backed veneer has the advantage over conventional laid-up veneers, as it comes in large sections which are easy and straightforward to apply, and the paper or fabric on the back of the veneer gives some stability before bonding. Good quality spray or hand applied contact adhesives will give a good bond; however consideration should be given to final finishes such as lacquers or oils and time before application. 3. Stainless Steel or sheet metal to MDF.Â
Often specified for decorative panels both internally and externally. A good bond can be achieved by using a high specification contact adhesive or a 2 part high performance adhesive. Care should be taken in the preparation of metals such as abrading and degreasing and potentially use of a 2 pack primer, if appropriate and care should be taken when pressing using 2 part adhesive systems.
4. Modified MDF. Â
Inherently stable and durable this product demands consideration when being bonded to itself or other products. Being modified this particular MDF is virtually unbreakable and whilst some PVA’s will work, to achieve good results it is often suggested that 2-part adhesives such as PRF resin are used which gives a high strength mechanical bond, or 2-part high performance adhesive system can be used. It is always recommended that testing is carried out prior to actual production.
5. Bonding FR MDF.Â
Many adhesives will bond FR MDF including most PVA’s, 2 part PRF, and both hand applied and spray contact adhesives however some are heat resistant and do not react to heat or fire, fire resistant, fire rated or fire proof and there is a minefield of industrial products available all of which will work well. Due diligence is required when making a selection. 6. Fabric to MDF.Â
Whether its office screens or stunning decorative panels bonding fabric to MDF is a straightforward operation. Lightweight spray contact adhesives can be used successfully for fast production methods along with water-based products such as some PVA’s, EVA’s or pressure-sensitive adhesives. Considerations should include the size of the panel, whether the fabric requires repositioning or stretching etc.
