Expanding Foam Yield

The yield of expanding foam refers to the amount of foam produced from a single container. 

The yield can vary depending on the type of foam and the manufacturer, so it’s essential to refer to the formula’s specifications or product information. 

For example, a 750ml canister of Tytex Expanding Foam has a maximum yield of 40 to 45 litres, whereas a 750ml Soudafoam Gun yields 37 litres of foam per canister. 

Factors that affect spray foam yield

Even a high-yield spray foam will only be successful if you know how to use it properly.

See below for the main culprits that affect the efficiency of spray foam. Understanding and observing these factors will enhance the potential of your expanding foam.

Temperature

The temperature of the foam and the surrounding environment can affect its expansion and curing process. 

For accurate application, keep the foam at the required temperature specified on the container or in the products’ data sheet. 

For example, if the manufacturer specifies keeping the formula at a  ‘5°C – 30°C’ temperature, you should keep it within this range from storage to application to see the best results. 

Cold weather can harm the viscosity of your product, causing the foam to peel or even preventing the foam from working altogether. To get your spray foam to a workable temperature during the winter, you may need to heat it.

Application method

You must give expanding foam adequate time to rise and grow before adding another coat. Otherwise, you risk packing down the foam too densely. However, spraying the foam too thinly could result in poor insulation.

Both errors can require partial or complete removal and reapplication, which is costly, time-consuming, and wasteful.

For the best results, use expanding foam alongside a solvent such as the Tytex gun and foam solvent cleaner. This product allows you to clean and remove uncured polyurethane foam from your applicator and substrates, so you can resolve issues before the foam has set.

Expiration date

Just like food, expanding foam has a best-before date. Using the foam beyond this date can be detrimental to the formula; therefore, you’re unlikely to yield the same results. 

Though it may seem tempting to use expired products, it can leave a faulty, unsafe finish that would reflect poorly on your professional reputation and cost you in repairs.
