Using PVA glue for plaster is generally a good idea, but there are a few things to consider. You can use PVA glue on plaster either as a primer or a bonding agent. However, it’s a slightly different process, particularly when it comes to drying times.

What is PVA?
PVA, or polyvinyl acetate, is a very common adhesive that has a wide variety of applications. From primary school classrooms to furniture making factories, it’s used on a daily basis.
PVA is white when it’s in liquid form, but it turns colourless as it dries. Used straight from the container it’s the perfect adhesive for materials like paper, wood or cloth. It can also be diluted with water and used as a primer, bonding agent or varnish.
Why use PVA glue for plaster?
In general there are two reasons for using PVA glue on plaster.
1. Priming
Depending on what they’re made of, walls can be very absorbent. That means they can suck a lot of the moisture out of anything that’s being applied to them. And in the case of plaster, that’s something you really want to avoid.
Plaster that dries too quickly can crack, spoiling the finish of the wall. Moreover, it may not stick to the wall as well, and sections can even fall off. Applying PVA as a primer helps prevent this from happening.
2. Bonding
PVA glue for plaster is highly effective when used as a bonding agent. Because it’s an adhesive, it helps the plaster adhere to the surface of the wall. TIP: Plaster board is not very absorbent, and generally won’t need priming or bonding with PVA.
Priming a wall for plaster
Choose a reputable PVA, such as Timbond professional Plasterers grade PVA Adhesive. A mix of 1 part PVA to 3 parts water is recommended for this process. The PVA can be applied to the wall in the same way as paint, using a brush or roller. For easy pouring use a drum tipper.
PVA is touch dry in 30 minutes to an hour. But if you’re using it as a primer, leave it to dry completely, preferably overnight. TIP: The thicker the layer of PVA, the longer it will take to dry. You can speed up the drying time by making sure the working space is warm and well ventilated.
Using PVA for bonding
Again, the PVA should be diluted with water and applied to the wall using a roller or brush. Don’t let the adhesive dry out, but apply the plaster while the PVA is still tacky. This will give a better bond to the surface of the wall.
