Sofa factory switches from solvent based adhesive to safer hotmelt glue.

The Problem 

A UK sofa manufacturer had been using solvent-based SBR contact adhesives for bonding polyester wadding to cushion foam. However, as these adhesives contain dichloromethane – a solvent with potential carcinogenic properties – this practice was deemed by the Health & Safety Executive to be no longer suitable for safe use in conjunction with the client’s existing extraction booth system.

To ensure the ongoing safety of its staff and comply with HSE regulations, the company would need to install suitable full face mask PPE and carry out regular air monitoring checks.

Our Bonding Solution 

The client contacted Adkwik to explore safer glue alternatives for upholstery assembly. Following a site inspection at the sofa factory, we realised that the best option would be to combine our Timbond H509 PSA Hotmelt adhesive with a B4 Swirl applicator system.

The result

This recommendation has benefited the client in several ways.

Safety – Without harmful solvents, Timbond H509 PSA glue presents less of a risk to workers. Combined with the B4 applicator, it also generates less overspray than an SBR contact adhesive and doesn’t require specialist PPE or spray booths.

Efficiency – Timbond H509 glue only needs to be applied to one surface (unlike SBR adhesive, which must be applied to both), so the process is much faster. As it doesn’t require a spray booth, downtime for essential cleaning and maintenance is also reduced.

Cost Savings – Single-surface application and reduced overspray have resulted in a reduction in the glue use of more than 65% by volume. The safer formulation of Timbond H509 Hotmelt glue has also eliminated the costs of specialist PPE, replacement spray booth filters and maintenance associated with SBR adhesives.

Resulting in a faster, safer and cost effective production process.
