Our solution 

We introduced John Watson Doors to our single component resin adhesive, Ubabond U30. An onsite demonstration revealed the benefits of switching to this formaldehyde-free formula. Ubabond requires no mixing or hardeners and has fast curing times, with no bleed-through — it’s ideal for bonding veneers and laminates. We agreed a trial order with the customer and provided support with onsite set-up and training.

The result

The transition to Ubabond U30 has been seamless for the customer, but the result has been game-changing.

• Switching to Ubabond U30 has saved the customer money by drastically reducing the amount of hazardous waste requiring disposal. Ubabond is formaldehyde and VOC free, meaning it’s much safer to use, and significantly less expensive to dispose of.

• Glue consumption has been reduced by 45%. Ubabond U30 is a single-component glue, so no messy, time-consuming mixing is required. No more issues with over-mixing or glue going off and being wasted — operators simply pour what they need into the roller. Users have also found that far less glue is needed per square metre.

• Product quality has improved vastly, with no more bleed-through on veneers, which means no more time-consuming fixes, and less product waste overall.

• Press time has been reduced from 2.5 minutes per door to just 1.5 minutes at 80°C, thanks to the fast bonding properties of Ubabond. Operators noted that they have the option to run even faster if required.

• Further time savings have been achieved by eliminating the need to mix and measure the correct ratio of resin and hardener. Additionally, roller wash-down time has been reduced by 50%, from one hour to just 30 minutes.

“We’re now able to press at just a minute and a half per door, running at 80 degrees with no problems. We could go quicker, but we don’t need to. We’re also using about half the amount of glue than before, and we no longer have the hassle of mixing, or glue going off and going to waste. We used to have to weigh out the right ratio of glue and hardener, and wash-down is now twice as fast, so switching to Ubabond U30 has been a huge time-saver. So far, we’re really impressed and haven’t had any problems at all.”
