In this article, we’re focusing on how you can bond tanalised or pressure treated timber using a wide range of commonly available adhesives. It’s important to note that we’re talking about timber treated with a wood preservative or Tanalith wood treatment such as Vascol or Protim and not timber that has been chemically modified such as Accoya.
What is the timber being used for?
This is the key point in determining which adhesive is the most appropriate.
For example, is it a structural load-bearing or non-load bearing application? What is the structural engineer’s recommendation? You can only decide which adhesive to use once you’ve answered these questions.
Here are the glues you would generally use in the following situations:
For load-bearing constructions:
• Phenol resorcinol formaldehyde
• Resorcinol formaldehyde
• Melamine urea formaldehyde
• Melamine formaldehyde
Examples of these glues in our range include Aerodux 185 and Prefere Melamine Resin.
For non-load bearing constructions:
• Polyurethane (Timbond or Tytex PU)
• Polyvinyl Acetate (Timbond or Tytex PVA)
• Urea Formaldehyde (One Shot Resin)
For exterior or damp conditions:
• Phenol Resorcinol Formaldehyde
Areodux 185, Resorcinol, and Polyurethane are the most common choices for outside or in the damp.
Other things to consider
To make sure you get the best bond possible your timber needs to have a moisture content of less than 20% and be free of any surface deposits or dirt.
The right temperature is also important. Ideally, you want to bond the tanalised wood when the air temperature is no less than 10 Deg C. and 25 Deg C. If you’re working outside this range, the bond time may not be as strong as you require.
