One of the most popular ways to insulate window frames in the home these days is with expanding foam for windows. Window insulation foam is great for sealing any cracks that can cause leaks or draughts. However, Tytex Expanding Foam should not be used for every home renovation project; in some cases it can actually make things worse. With so many horror stories of what happens when builders use foam incorrectly, here is a guide to the correct way to use expanding foam for windows, as well as a few tips on what not to do.
How to Use Expanding Foam
To use expanding foam for windows properly follow these steps:
- Remove any dust or debris from the area.
- Shake the can of window insulation foam for at least 60 seconds.
- Apply the dispenser to the can as directed and test it out on cardboard.
- Invert the can and insert it into the crack or gap in the window frame .
- Pull the trigger to fill the gap with foam.
- Wipe away excess foam with a cloth soaked in solvent.
- Once dry, gently press the foam into the gap using a flat knife.
- Safely store the foam away or dispose of it as directed when empty.
How Not to Use Expanding Foam
- Never use expanding foam for windows unless you have gun foam cleaner on hand. This liquid helps to chemically dissolve excess foam before it hardens. Without it, you will have a much harder time cleaning up any mess.
- Avoid purchasing foam that has reached its expiry date. The quality of the foam may not be up to the task you need, so make sure you check the “Best by” date first before use.
- Have protective gear on hand when using Tytex Expanding Foam. Once on your hands or arms it can be very hard to remove, so disposable gloves are highly recommended. In addition, always make sure you have some safety covering for your eyes before use.
- Make sure no foam gets inside electrical outlets as this can jam up the parts and could be flammable.
- Be careful about getting foam near lighting as this could trap heat and increase the risk of fire.
- Make sure you have the right type of foam for the task at hand. High expanding foam can end up jamming windows closed, so make sure you get a product specified for use with windows.
- Ensure that no excess foam drips from the nozzle onto the ground. Try to keep it on a cardboard surface until it has stopped dripping and wipe away any mess with a cloth soaked in solvent.
