PU adhesive cartridges are used by all kinds of people on a daily basis, from DIY to major industries. That’s because a polyurethane bonding agent offers a lot of advantages over other adhesives. In a nutshell, PU glue is good stuff. But is it better to use it from a cartridge or a bottle?
Here at Adkwik we know all there is to know about adhesives and sealants. We’ve been supplying them to the woodworking and construction industries since 1994, so we’ve got plenty of experience. Read on if you’d like to know more about the difference between a cartridge of adhesive and a bottle.
Cartridges and bottles
Because PU adhesive is used by so many tradesmen and industries, it’s widely available in different forms. Most commonly these are cartridges and bottles.
It’s important to remember that the adhesive inside these containers does exactly the same job. Apart from the shape of the dispenser, the only real difference is in the consistency of the adhesive. Essentially, the adhesive in a bottle is liquid, while PU adhesive cartridges contain gel.
Gel or liquid?
Whether the adhesive you use is gel or liquid, the strength of the bond it forms will be the same. For example, Tytex 1kg 30 Min Set PU Adhesive is supplied in a bottle and applied by brush or spreader. The same adhesive in gel form from a cartridge would be just as effective. The only difference would be in the application.
So is it easier to apply adhesive from a cartridge than a bottle? The answer to that will depend on what it is you’re bonding. That said, gel doesn’t run in the same way as liquid, and that can often be an advantage.
For jobs where you need a continuous and accurate flow of adhesive, a cartridge is generally more controllable. Using a cartridge gun you can apply the adhesive in a straight line where needed. It can also be applied more accurately in small spaces.
Other advantages of PU adhesive cartridges
When you’re using a polyurethane bonding agent you won’t always be working on a horizontal service. One of the benefits of gel is that you can easily apply it vertically or to a ceiling.
Because gel doesn’t run and can be applied more accurately, there should be less cleaning up to do. One advantage of this is that it speeds up the job. It’s also good news in situations where surplus adhesive could spoil the finish.
Using cartridges
Adhesive cartridges are used extensively by the construction industry. Their easier application makes them ideal for bonding wood, plaster board, metal and numerous other materials. Because of their accuracy, they are also commonly used in areas where a waterproof bond is needed.
