Materials like brass and copper are highly recommended for decorative wall panels, high quality interior furniture, and counter fronts. Polished brass or copper is an eye-catching and impressive material for these type of applications.
However, fixing or bonding these metals, usually to MDF or Birch plywood, can be tricky. So, how do we get the perfect bond and achieve that fantastic mirror finish?
First, prepare the metal. It’s imperative this is abraded and cleaned before bonding as both materials oxidise relatively quickly and can develop a fine coating that sits on the surface. Two-part primers can help if applied correctly.
So, what can we use? There are some very good contact adhesives available, however, high-performance polyurethane adhesives are a very good option. Let’s look at some of the best:
Timbond X600 PU Adhesive
Timbond X600 2-Part high performance PU Adhesive. This product requires mixing parts A & B together. The mixed product is spread on the core material and once assembled needs clamping or holding in place with weights until cured. It’s very strong and allows for repositioning.
Tytex Ultraclear MS polymer adhesive sealant
Ultraclear is ideal for bonding in brass inlays or small components into grooves. This product is cartridge based (290ml) and super easy to use.
Tytex Sprayable PU Adhesive
Tytex sprayable PU Adhesive is a canister based (22ltr) PU adhesive which is ideal for fast applications. Bonds permanently and like Timbond X600 has a very high temperature resistance of 169C. Apply using the spray gun toboth surfaces and allow 4 to 6 minutes for the adhesive to tack off. Bring both surfaces together and use a roller to press both surfaces together. This adhesive has a low green strength, and the bond strength will progress to full cure in 24 hours.
