Choosing the right glue applicator can improve product quality and longevity, as well as process efficiency in the factory. It can also make life a lot easier on the production line! In this blog we’ll conduct a quick review of the different glue applicators available on the market and the relative merits of each, with the aim of helping you to optimise your adhesive application process. Naturally, regardless of the equipment chosen, thorough cleaning and maintenance, combined with consistent visual management, are essential to achieve optimum outcomes. Read our whitepaper for a more detailed look at getting the best out of your equipment.
The trusty original: hand-held glue roller
The hand-held glue roller is easy to use and inexpensive. It’s ideal for low volume jobs, or where glue needs to be applied to small or irregular surfaces. It offers great control and flexibility, it’s portable, and it can be used across resin, water-based and PU glues – a classic! The Pfohl shown here is hard to beat as manual rollers go – available in 75mm, 150mm and 200mm, fitted with either rubber or aluminium rollers.

Automatic 2-roller glueing machines
The automatic 2-roller glue machine is a great starting point in automatic glue application, due to its balance of simplicity and efficiency. It brings speed and consistency to the process, and is easy to use and clean down. A model such as the Osama Technologies S2R shown, can be used in a glueing line if equipped with the right accessories, making it an adaptable piece of equipment – it can also be fitted with a washing accessory making this even easier. The S2R can be used across resin, water-based and PU glues (using a tray system) and on various types of materials, with a working width of 400-1600mm. This is a great entry option to automatic rollers.

Automatic 4-roller glueing machines
Moving onto more heavy-duty automation, the 4-roller glue machine can handle higher production speeds and more demanding workloads, so it’s ideal for a high-volume production line. The S4R-P shown comes with added functionality and glue is fed in via a piped feed, offering better control and efficiency. This model is used across various industries, including door production, insulation, wooden flooring and mattress assembly.

Automatic 4-roller glueing machine for hotmelt glues
Machines made specifically for applying hotmelt glues have rollers with controlled heating systems so that hotmelt adhesive can be heated to the precise temperatures required. This helps achieve consistent glue viscosity, for even application and strong bonding. The HotMaster shown above has a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with an easy-to-use touch screen that manages and controls all the functions.

Automatic rake applicator for PU glues
The automatic rake applicator applies PU glue via a nozzle head which crosses backwards and forwards across the material in a comb-like structure as it passes through the machine. Slower than rollers, the rake applicator is a specialist bit of kit, particularly useful for high viscosity adhesives and precise applications, such as decorative profiles and edges. Its ergonomic design makes it easy to handle, allowing for greater control during use.
